Hello everyone,

This weekend the server will be shutdown for an estimated 2-3 hours interval for some scheduled maintenance. So if you see the site is offline do not think there is something bad or we're under attack or things like that.

I just need this time to make some security upgrades of the Windows Server operating system and also to set the server to take care if itself in some situations because I will leave Bucharest for about 3 weeks and I will not have physical access to it.

For example if here will be some power blackout the server must be able to power itself on and come back online when the power is restored. This is just one of the things which needs to be set as after a power failure I will not be able to power it on remotely by sending a Wake-On-LAN signal (as it's usually done). WOL doesn't work after a power failure.

I apologize for any incovenience.

If during these 3 weeks there will be any unexpected issue don't forget we have our secondary forum for emergency communications and updates:

https://free-energy.proboards.com/

And also be sure the content of the site is safe, we have automated backups running daily to an external secure encrypted location, the data will not be lost even if there is a physical damage of the server.

Regards,

Fighter

We're back online.

The maintenance and especially the RAM upgrade went well, without incidents like it happened the previous time.

This time I was prepared to address that kind of problems (bootable USBs, clones for the bootable partition and MBR, etc.).

I ran compatibility and stress tests for the new RAM modules and they performed as expected so we're good to go. ☺️

The doubled RAM capacity will ensure the smooth running of our site in the future as the content of our site (images, documents and videos) keeps increasing.

Sorry for the downtime but it was necessary, I managed to reduce it to less than one hour.

Regards,

Fighter

Hi guys,

I just finished upgrading our site to .NET Framework version 4.8 from version 4.5.

This will ensure our site is taking advantage of the latest security and performance offered by Microsoft's technologies.

It was a lot of work to do because in this process I needed to also upgrade tens of NuGet packages which are integrated in our highly customized MVC Forum platform (each package having its own specific version) and "convince" them to "talk" to each other and with the new .NET version.

Usually this kind of upgrade can result in breaking functionality/features and also there is the risk of bugs appearing.

I did some basic testing after the upgrade and I'm gonna watch the logs for potential errors but just in case I miss anything let me know through a personal message if you encounter any error or if you see any issues in the functionality of our site.

Hi guys,

Because of circumstances which are not under my control I'll need to relocate the server and all the equipment (router, UPS, etc.) to a new location.

So for a few days our site will go offline until the relocation is done.

The duration of the relocation depends also on how fast the ISP responds to my technical requests.

At the new location I'll need to ask the ISP to open the required ports through their equipment and that will take some time as the ISPs are very slow and sometime reluctant to make such non-standard configurations to their network.

Sorry for the inconveniences but it needs to be done.

So do not worry when you see our site is offline, we'll be back online as soon as possible.

Fighter

Hi,

The server will be shutdown within approx. 8 hours for relocation.

We'll be back online within a few days days, can't estimate the duration exactly as it will depend on how fast the ISP will respond to the technical requests.

Hello,

The relocation is complete and we're back online.

As I expected the ISP was reluctant to open the required ports and let our server outside its firewall but in the end it had no choice because I presented solid arguments.

They warned me that the server will be exposed to attack attempts and so on but that's not a problem because our firewall is able to handle thousands of scans and attack attempts every day since the first day we came online. 🙂

What I noticed is some decrease in the speed of the internet, the connection is not as good as in Bucharest.

It's still a fiber optics connection, the speed is decent but the ISP explained that the infrastructure in the area is not as performant as the one from Bucharest. It's nothing which can be done about this.

The relocation was necessary because now I can handle any issue fast, it's not necessary anymore to administer the server remotely and sometimes to travel hundreds of kilometers when there is an incident and I cannot connect remotely.

@Jagau, I'll take care of placing the Paypal donation widget on the right-side of the site as soon as I find some available time for it.
